Highlights of our adventure:
SUMO WRESTLING
An interesting display of respectful sportsmanship and the popularity it commands.
MIYAJIMA ISLAND
Although geared for the tourist this was a laid back and beautiful island, even though the deer ate my map!
NIKKO
A world heritage site, with amazing temples and shrines set amid lush forest areas.
HIROSHIMA
The city seemed friendlier than Tokyo with fewer people and a more casual style.
TOILETS
The toilets - with all the gadgets you can imagine to make your toileting experience as pleasant as possible.
I was particularly relieved to find Western style toilets almost everywhere! Squat toilets seem to still exist in older areas, eg Hiroshima Castle and Gion Corner.
SHINKANSEN
The express trains are efficient and comfortable for travel between cities. The stations have extensive signage so that even we could navigate our way to the correct platforms on time.
HOTELS
Although the rooms are compact, the beds are very comfy and everything is clean.
